Parliament - The Nyanga police station in the Western Cape remained the police station in South Africa recording the highest number of murders, the country's crime stats, released on Tuesday, revealed.
Of the 20,366 murders reported across the country, 308 were recorded at Nyanga, compared to the 281 cases reported at the police station in the previous year (an increase of 9.6 percent).
The number of murders at Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal rose sharply by 19.3 percent from 187 to 223, making it the police station with the second highest number of murders recorded in 2017/18.
Of the 12 stations recording the highest number of murders in 2017/18, nine are in the Western Cape province.
They are Philippi East (205 murders), Delft (195), Khayelitsha (192), Kraaifontein (186), Gugutethu (182), Mfuleni (157), Harare (142), and Mitchells Plain (140).
Police also listed 30 police stations which contributed to 15.5 percent of the 601,366 contact crimes reported in South Africa. Contact crimes include murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, assault common, robbery common and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Fourteen of the stations are situated in Gauteng, nine in the Western Cape, four in KwaZulu-Natal and one each in Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and Free State.
