Police in Gauteng have launched a manhunt for armed assailants after an off duty police officer was shot and killed in Mabopane.
Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the police officer was killed on Monday afternoon.
“It is reported that a 50-year-old sergeant who is attached to Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit was driving in a red Polo when he was shot at by suspects who were driving in a sedan. The police officer lost control, and his car collided with a Toyota Venture and came to a halt,” said Masondo.

In November, IOL reported that two Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers were shot, resulting in one fatality while the other was in critical condition.
The incident occurred in Vosloorus in what was suspected to be a hijacking.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the off-duty officers, Constable Xolani Maxwell Ndlovu and Constable Papo Khumalo, both aged 36, were attacked at approximately 3am at the corner of Nguza Road and Pelser Bridge, Extension 25.
A witness reported hearing gunshots and found the officers lying on the side of the road, with one empty cartridge discovered at the scene.
Emergency services were called, but Ndlovu was pronounced dead at the scene, while Khumalo was transported to Alberton Hospital for treatment.
