The uMgungundlovu District Municipality is reeling from the impact of severe weather conditions, as community members are cautioned about the ongoing risk of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

The uMgungundlovu District Municipality Disaster Management Unit said the grim toll of this natural disaster was highlighted when the Search and Rescue Team, led by Lieutenant Colonel S. Scheepers of the Hilton SAPS Search and Rescue Diving Unit, recovered three bodies in the vicinity of Bishopstowe, Caluza and Smero.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has reported a decreased likelihood of disruptive rainfall. Despite this, isolated showers and thundershowers are still possible.

Therefore, residents and motorists are advised to exercise caution due to the following risks:

  • Flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas, potentially leading to road and bridge closures.
  • Damage to infrastructure and mud houses.
  • Weather-related incidents, such as accidents and fatalities.

“It is essential to stay informed and follow safety guidelines to minimise the risks associated with this severe weather alert,” the Disaster Management Unit said.

“uMgungundlovu District Municipality Disaster Management Team will continue to monitor areas that are prone to weather-related incidents.”

Meanwhile, a Yellow Level 1 warning for severe thunderstorms is expected in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

Districts expected to be affected include King Cetshwayo, uMkhanyakude, Zululand, uThukela, Amajuba and uMzinyathi.

Impacts include: Possible heavy downpours that may lead to localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges; localised damage to formal and informal settlements and infrastructure; and difficult driving conditions due to slippery roads.

What to do: If possible, stay indoors; avoid low-lying roads and bridges, as they are susceptible to flooding; avoid being in an open field as they are susceptible to lightning; move vehicles to sheltered structures to avoid hail damage; seek shelter under a well-constructed structure as strong winds and lightning may result in debris; and avoid touching electrical equipment when wet.
