A Sophiatown couple were arrested by police on allegations of dealing in drugs and bribery.

Police said the arrest on Tuesday emanated from a tip-off from a community member about drugs to be delivered at premises in Haartebees Court Waterval in the Sophiatown area, Johannesburg.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said police proceeded to the place and a woman was arrested immediately after receiving the bag that had small packets of cat, mandrax, two pistols with filed-off serial numbers, 78 live rounds of ammunition and three magazines.

“While the police were busy processing the case at the police station, the woman’s husband came to the station and allegedly offered a R3,000 bribe in exchange for the release of the suspect.

“He was also arrested and when searched, members found packets of cat in his possession.”

The husband and wife are expected to make their first appearance in court on Thursday.

Police said they face charges which include dealing in drugs, bribery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Last week, a foreign national appeared in the Parow Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town after being found in possession of mandrax worth R1 million.

Police received information that the house where the drugs were found was a possible distribution point for drugs.
