Kimberley - Mystery surrounds the drowning of a 54-year-old domestic worker employed by Northern Cape MEC of Agriculture, Norman Shushu.
It is believed that the woman drowned in a swimming pool at Shushu’s Carrington Road home early on Friday morning.
Although Shushu is out of town, his family members were home at the time of the incident.
The Head of Ministry, Lerato Wa-Modise, said the woman stayed on the premises, adding that it was a freak accident.
“We were informed that one of the assistants passed away in the freak accident. We want to afford the family an opportunity to mourn and arrange the funeral. We are deeply saddened by the incident and want to convey our condolences to the family members and loved-ones of the deceased,” she said.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Dimakatso Mooi, confirmed the incident.
“On December 15, at approximately 9.30am, the body of a 54-year-old woman was found in a swimming pool at a residence in Kimberley.”
Mooi advised people to be cautious this festive season.
“With the heat, we are currently experiencing, many people will try to cool themselves. We urge them not to attempt swimming, whether in pools or dams if they do not know how to swim or are under the influence of alcohol.
“Parents are also encouraged never to leave children to swim alone and unsupervised.”
