After weeks of heavy downpours and damaging winds, the South African Weather Service is warning of heatwave conditions over several parts of the country from today (Saturday) until Monday.

Saws says it is going to be extremely hot over Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, the north-eastern areas of Free State, the eastern parts of the North West as well as the north-eastern areas of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

"Hot to very hot conditions are expected across these provinces with temperatures expected to exceed over 40°C in the Lowveld areas the Limpopo Valley and Western Bushveld.

Cooler weather is expected from Monday with isolated to scattered and widespread showers over the areas of the Western Cape, KZN and central parts of the country.

Tips to stay safe during a heatwave

– Limit participation in outdoor activities. If you plan on participating in outdoor activities, ensure you rest and keep well hydrated

– Drink lots of water and stay hydrated

– Wear the appropriate clothing and ensure you use sunscreen

– Keep your animals hydrated

– Give them energy boosting snacks

– Limit their exposure to the sun

– “Contact your vet if you notice signs of dehydration or heatstroke, including difficulty breathing, lethargy, reduced appetite, dry gums and nose, vomiting or drooling/foaming at the mouth, and increased heart rate”, warns PetIQ’s Dr Sarah Cutler Tew.
