For over a century, Kellanova, formerly Kellogg’s, has shaped breakfast habits in South Africa. This morning, at The Venue Green Park in Sandton, the company hosted the Breakfast and Nutrition Forum, reinforcing its commitment to public health and nutrition. The event brought together parents, industry leaders, and nutrition experts to discuss the role of breakfast in closing dietary gaps and equipping families with the knowledge to make informed food choices.
Kellanova’s Corporate Affairs Director, Zandile Mposelwa, opened the forum by reaffirming the company's Better Days Promise - a commitment to expanding food access and addressing issues of hunger, well-being, sustainability, and inclusion. Her message underscored the company's broader vision: to nourish communities while evolving its product offerings to meet changing consumer needs.
A panel discussion, led by Dr Katlego Lekalakala, explored the intersection of nutrition and consumer preferences. Ntiti Hlabjago, Kellanova’s Research Nutrition & Development Director, outlined the company’s approach to well-being, while Marketing Director Tammy Darroch shared insights into what parents look for in a breakfast cereal—nutritional value balanced with taste appeal. Parent representative Mira Naidu brought a personal perspective, discussing the challenges and realities of ensuring healthy breakfasts for children. Functional Nutrition and Health Coach Christine Baxter provided expert analysis on fibre’s role in digestion, the benefits of food fortification, and the importance of a balanced diet.
A shared consensus emerged: breakfast cereals remain a staple in South African households, playing a crucial role in daily carbohydrate, protein, fibre, and calcium intake, especially when paired with milk. Fibre, essential for digestion and heart health, is often overlooked in modern diets. Micronutrient fortification, recognised by the World Health Organization as a cost-effective public health intervention, remains a key strategy in improving nutrition on a large scale.
At the heart of Kellanova’s work is listening to consumers - understanding their needs and developing products that are nutritious, convenient, and enjoyable. Innovation and continuous product improvement drive this mission, ensuring that ingredients and technology align with evolving health priorities.
“Kellanova is actively promoting healthier eating habits and advocating for breakfast as a daily essential meal,” Mposelwa said. “Research and global health organisations, including the WHO, recognise breakfast as vital to balanced nutrition and cognitive function, and Kellogg’s range of cereals is a great choice for the family at every breakfast moment.”
As the forum concluded, one message was clear: breakfast is more than just a meal - it’s a foundation for health and well-being, and Kellanova remains dedicated to shaping a better, more nourished future.
