The Dolphins travel to Gauteng for their next match against the log-leading Lions in the CSA 4-Day Series, in a top-of-the-table clash, hoping to continue their recent run of form when matchday six resumes on Thursday.

The Durban-based outfit will aim to carry over their winning momentum after recently beating the North West Dragons at the Wanderers, knowing that victory could propel them towards the championship, while defeat could hand their hosts the title instead.

Thursday’s matches will be the penultimate round before the final, and the Lions hold a commanding 17-point lead. They also remain unbeaten this season, with three wins and two draws so far.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, have lost just one game – against Western Province last year – and have since won two and drawn two matches. Their most recent match was a six-wicket win over the Dragons.

Dolphins coach Quinton Friend said the team is looking forward to playing the defending champions, as the challenge excites his players.

“It is the ultimate format, and our boys are really looking forward to playing the log leaders,” Friend said. “If you want to compete for the trophy, then you have to be able to beat the best, and this is a great opportunity for us to do that.

“I think the balance of the squad means we cover our bases well, and we will only really know what approach to take once we assess the conditions at the Wanderers. It’s great to have different options available to us, especially for such a big game in the competition.”

Keshav Maharaj, who captained the team against the North West Dragons, will not be part of the squad against the Lions. The same applies to Andile Simelane, who is ruled out due to injury. Marques Ackerman will make his return from injury, while Eathan Bosch and Banele Cele have also been recalled to the squad.
