Johannesburg – Thanks to a fourth-wicket partnership of a 100 runs between Ashwell Prince and Colin Ingram the Warriors reached 271 for nine at close of play in their Sunfoil series cricket match played at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth, on Thursday.

The Titans won the toss and asked the Warriors to take first strike.

The home side were soon in trouble with both Michael Price and Jon-Jon Smuts trapped in front by Ethy Mbhalati in consecutive overs.

The recovery was instigated by Davy Jacobs and Ashwell Prince, with a third-wicket partnership of 38.

But CJ de Villiers put an end to their endeavours in the 15th over, rapping Jacobs on the pads, plumb in front for 32.

Prince, 76 off 127-balls, which included nine boundaries, was eventually out lofting an easy catch to David Wiese at mid-off, to give spinner Paul Harris his first-wicket.

Harris then claimed the wicket of Kelly Smuts who failed to add to the score.

Ingram and Athenkosi Dyili added 62 for the sixth-wicket, but a slight aberration from Ingram saw him go for one big hit to many and failed to clear the ropes and was caught by Wiese on the mid-wicket boundary.

When the umpires called time Basheer Walters had yet to get off the mark and Gurshwin Rabie was on four.

In the other match played at the Wanderers, the Dolphins were seven without loss at close of play in their match against the Highveld Lions.

The Lions put in to bat after the Dolphins had won the toss, were tottering from the onset and by the time the 23rd over was bowled the home side were in dire straits with only 51 runs to show for their efforts.

Quinton de Kock (4) was castled by a peach of a delivery from Craig Alexander. Stephen Cook (1) was caught at third slip by David Miller off Kyle Abbott who also claimed the wicket of Neil McKenzie (4).

Zander de Bruyn got into double figures (27), before misjudging a swinging delivery from Alexander, which was edged to the keeper Daryn Smit.

Gulam Bodi (11), failed to get the score moving and was bowled neck-and-crop by a Robbie Frylinck yorker.

Temba Bavuma and Thami Tsolekile settled the innings putting on 68 for the sixth-wicket.

Bavuma failed to set the stage alight, dropped by David Miller on 22 off 78-balls. But in the context of the game, it was exactly what was needed at the time.

Alexander finally got Bavuma inducing the batsman to edge a delivery to the keeper Smit.

Tsolekile and Chris Morris fell within two balls of each other to put the Dolphins in control.

The third match between the Cobras and the Knights at Boland Park failed to materialise with the first-day washed out without a toss or a ball being bowled. – Sapa
