Bad light stops play at Wanderers

The Warriors were 179 for the loss of three wickets when bad light stopped play on the second day of the SuperSport Series match against the Lions at the Wanderers on Friday.

As soon as the players left the field, the heavens opened and scuppered any chance of play resuming as a tremendous electric storm hit the ground.

When the covers came on, Michael Price was unbeaten on 71 and Justin Kreusch on 25.

Craig Alexander bowled magnificently to remove the stumps of both Bevan Bennett (17) and Jon-Jon Smuts (35) and the only other wicket to fall for the Warriors was that of Arno Jacobs, lbw to Shane Burger (24).

Price and Kreusch then settled into an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 57 runs, including eight fours.

Earlier in the day, the Lions were bowled out for 338 with Burger unbeaten on 114.

Resuming on 316/8, Ethan O'Reilly made 30, his highest score in the Supersport Series, after sharing a ninth-wicket stand of 86 off 141 balls with Burger. Burger, who has been captaining the amateur league for the last few seasons, proved a worthy replacement as both teams were missing their regular key players.

Even the players would have been thankful for the almighty storm, as play was drifting aimlessly, which enabled them to find refuge in the dressing room and watch the Proteas against New Zealand in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. - Sapa
