The Cape Cobras wrapped up their final match of the season within three days, beating the Warriors by seven wickets at Boland Park on Saturday to put them in pole position to retain the SuperSport Series trophy.

The home side comfortably chased down the 151-run target set by the Warriors, who were earlier in the day bowled out for 217.

Stiaan van Zyl (54 not out) and Owais Shah (38 not out) were the undefeated batsmen who guided the defending champions home.

Although the Cobras now sit atop of the log standings with 112.44 points, they will need to wait until the conclusion of the match between the second-placed Titans and the Knights in Benoni before they are assured the trophy for the second successive year.

Van Zyl played a calming knock after the Cobras lost three wickets which threatened to derail his side's victory charge. The classy left-hander played his trademark cover drive with precision, while also rotating the strike comfortably to frustrate spinner Simon Harmer.

The off-spinner, who enjoyed a wonderful performance with five wickets in the first innings, and scores of 48 and 68 not out with the bat, was again the Warriors' most threatening bowler.

However, with English professional Shah at the crease, the Cobras were never really under threat.

Veteran spinner Claude Henderson returned 5/83 in the Warriors' second innings to finish with impressive match figures of 9/148 to claim the Man of the Match award.

Part-time spinner Justin Ontong also claimed two Warriors wickets to bring the visitors' innings to a close shortly after the lunch interval. – Sapa
