Johannesburg – The Cape Cobras opened a gap of more than 13 points at the top of the Sunfoil Series table after settling for a rain-interrupted draw against the Dolphins in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

No play was possible on the last two days of the match.

The Cobras, on 66 without loss, were left trailing by 244 runs in their first innings at the close of play after a shortened second day.

Alistair Gray, on 40 not out, was at the crease with Andrew Puttick, unbeaten on 18, but with constant disruptions, even early on, the match seemed destined to end in a draw.

Earlier in the game, Divan van Wyk made 95 and Dolphins skipper Daryn Smit contributed 94 as they orchestrated a recovery effort for the hosts, who were dismissed for 310 runs in their first innings.

Fast bowler Rory Kleinveldt returned 5/54 to lead the Cobras' attack, again proving his form after he was called up to the Proteas squad for the Test series against Australia next month.

The Dolphins, who have been thwarted by their home conditions for the last couple of seasons, settled in third place in the standings.

As with the Cobras, however, four of the other five teams held at least one match in hand. – Sapa
