The Cape Cobras outclassed a struggling Impi side to win by 35 runs in their T20 Challenge match at Willowmoore Park, in Benoni on Friday.

The Impi could only muster 130 for seven in their 20 overs chasing 166 for victory.

It was former Australian left arm slow bowler, Brad Hogg, who bowled the Cobras to victory with three for 15 in his four overs.

The 41-year-old showed his experience in the shortest format of the game, bowling a miserly spell going at less than four runs an over.

When the Impi came out to bat they struggled to maintain the required run rate of above eight per over.

One of several England internationals, Luke Wright opened the batting with 21-year-old Khayelihle Zondo. Together they reached 46 in the eighth over before Wright was dismissed off the bowling of leg-spinner Alistair Gray.

Big-hitting Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate came in only to be out trapped leg before first ball from Gray.

It left the 29-year-old spinner on a hat-trick which he missed, but the damage was already done.

Wickets continued to fall regularly before the home side found themselves 111 for seven with three overs left, leaving the Cobras an easy victory.

Earlier, a commanding 60 not out off 40 balls by England international Owais Shah lifted the Cobras to 165 for five in their 20 overs.

Shah coming in at number three, batted until the end of the innings achieving a strike rate of 150, and hitting seven fours and one six.

Shah shared a third wicket partnership of 57 with Dane Vilas (25) coming off 43 balls.

The visitors made a good start to the match with Andrew Puttick and Stiaan van Zyl putting on 63 for the first wicket.

Van Zyl was severe on the Impi attackm striking six fours and a six in his 42 off just 29 balls. Puttick contributed with a brisk 22 off 17 before being caught by Ryan Canning off the bowling of Englishman Wright.

The pick of the Impi bowlers was former England captain Paul Collingwood with one for 20 in his three overs. - Sapa
