Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Ministry of Sport and Recreation agreed on the way forward for cricket after the two parties met in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Members of CSA's board met with sport's minister Fikile Mbalula and his deputy, Gert Oosthuizen, to give government an update on the state of transformation, corporate governance and other organisational issues within the sport.

“There is a convergence of vision between CSA and the government on the best way forward to take cricket to every corner of our country and make our sport a truly national sport of winners,” said CSA's acting president AK Khan.

“We welcome the input of the government to our endeavours and we look forward to working with them in taking both cricket and South African sport forward.”

Mbalula last met with the board at a meeting in Johannesburg on February 12, where the voting members of CSA passed a motion of no-confidence in the then-president Mtutuzeli Nyoka.

Nyoka's position was terminated, with immediate effect, and Khan is fulfilling his duties until the election of a new president at the Annual General Meeting in August.

Nyoka and CSA's chief executive Gerald Majola were involved in a public dispute around bonuses paid to Majola and other CSA employees after the hosting of the 2009 Indian Premier League and ICC Champion Trophy tournaments.

Mbalula appealed to both sides to keep their public dispute away from media attention and to rather focus on the Proteas' participation in the current cricket World Cup.

“We will not fold arms when something is in the public domain,” said Mbalula at the time and stated that government would issue a comprehensive reaction to the events when both sides had been heard.

It is believed that Mbalula had now asked Sascoc to intervene and advise on what steps to take should Nyoka go ahead with threatened legal action against the CSA board. – Sapa
