Teenager Quinton de Kock scored 83 runs to help the Highveld Lions reach 257/7 in their innings against the Titans in the domestic One-day Cup match in Centurion on Wednesday.

In a touching gesture to celebrate the stadium's 25th birthday, 12 former Titans captains formed a guard of honour for the teams as they took to the field.

Titans skipper Martin van Jaarsveld won the toss and put the Lions in to bat in the first 50-over match of the season.

The visitors struggled to gain momentum as the Titans bowled with tight discipline.

In trouble at 31/3, opener Stephen Cook and De Kock scored a valuable 60 runs for the fourth wicket before Cook (44) holed out to Ethy Mbhalati at mid-on, off the bowling of Henry Davids.

De Kock also shared a 63-run stand with Jean Symes before the 18-year-old was run out by the combined effort of Rowan Richards and wicketkeeper Mangaliso Mosehle.

Symes was unbeaten on 70 and his innings included five fours and a six.

The bowlers shared the wickets as Van Jaarsveld mixed them up to great advantage, especially in the first 25 overs. – Sapa
