Former Protea fast bowler Friedel de Wet has signed for the Dolphins, just days before the start of the first-class SuperSport Series competition.

The 31-year-old, who played two Tests for South Africa in the 2009/10 season, joins from English county side Hampshire where he has been since the start of the year.

The Durban franchise begin their season against the Highveld Lions on Thursday – a match that will pit De Wet against his former union.

“Friedel will add experience and depth to the bowling unit, helping strengthen this area of concern, especially for our four-day campaign,” said Jesse Chellan, chief executive of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union.

“He is a quality strike bowler and will be expected to lead our attack, allowing our younger bowlers to bowl around him.

“We are really looking forward to him leading from the front.”

De Wet had been with the Lions since 2005 before his move to England in January.

He was called up to play for the Proteas against England two seasons back after Dale Steyn was injured, but picked up a stress fracture in his back during his second game, before falling out of contention for the national team.

“It is a real plus to have an extra quick in the squad and particularly with it being a highly congested season,” said Dolphins coach Graham Ford.

“Friedel will add depth to the bowling unit which is much needed to cover for injury and fatigue.”

The Dolphins have already recruited West Indian batsman Chris Gayle and Australian quick Shaun Tait for the Twenty20 leg of the season. – Sapa
