Johannesburg – Paceman Kyle Abbott ran rampant as the Dolphins took control, storming to a commanding lead on the second day of their Sunfoil Series match against the Warriors in East London on Friday.

The hosts were dismissed for 154 runs in their first innings and the Dolphins reached 57/2 at the close, holding a 199-run lead with eight wickets left in their second innings when stumps were drawn 26 overs early due to bad light.

Jonathan Vandiar, on 20, was still at the crease and Cody Chetty was unbeaten on four, guiding the Dolphins to 57/2 at the close after they lost two early wickets.

The Warriors had earlier resumed their first innings at 7/1, trailing by 289 runs in their first innings in the morning session.

Night watchman Basheer Walters was removed by seamer Craig Alexander in the second over of the day before Michael Price and JJ Smuts combined in an 80-run stand for the third wicket to get the hosts back on track.

With Price, who made 44, and Walters, who contributed 45, looking set to put the hosts in the driving seat, however, Abbott led the charge as the Warriors crumbled to a dismal first-innings total of 154 all out.

The home side lost their last seven wickets for only 67 runs in a middle and lower-order collapse, with Abbott returning 6/64 to put the Dolphins in charge.

The match officials said play would start earlier than scheduled on Saturday's third day after nearly a third of the second day's play was lost to light. – Sapa
