Johannesburg – The Dolphins struck shortly before the close of play as the Warriors stumbled early in their first innings on the opening day of the Sunfoil Series match in East London on Thursday.

The visitors were well restricted after winning the toss and choosing to bat first, as they were bowled out for 296 runs with seven overs left in the first day's play.

Looking to put some runs on the board before the close, the Warriors took an early knock when seam bowler Kyle Abbott had opener Davy Jacobs caught behind for a duck from the third ball of the innings.

The hosts were on 7/1, trailing by 289 runs, when stumps were drawn.

Michael Price, on four, was still at the crease with night watchman Basheer Walters unbeaten on two as the pair saw out the remaining 3.3 overs before play was called three overs early.

Earlier, 21-year-old middle-order batsman Cody Chetty had anchored a mini-recovery after the Dolphins had been reduced to 28/2 in the 11th over of the day.

Chetty contributed 77 runs for his eighth career half-century before he was stumped by wicketkeeper Athenkosi Dyili off the bowling of spinner Simon Harmer.

David Miller (41), skipper Daryn Smit (39) and Jonathan Vandiar (38) all assisted in reconstructing the Dolphins' innings.

Harmer took three scalps on either side of the lunch break, returning 3/76, while paceman Andrew Birch bagged 3/67 and played a key role in removing the tail. – Sapa
