Dean Elgar smashed a career-best century to pave the way as the Knights secured a 102-run win over the Dolphins on the Duckworth Lewis system in a rain-delayed One-day Cup match in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

Sharing 185 runs for the fourth wicket with Obus Pienaar, Elgar set the pace for the visitors after they won the toss and chose to bat.

The 24-year-old left-handed batsman made 117 runs off 112 balls – only his second one-day century in 79 matches – while Pienaar contributed 88.

Fast bowler Dane Paterson broke the stand in the 43rd over when he had Elgar caught by Khayelihle Zondo, triggering a middle-order collapse.

The Knights lost five wickets for only 32 runs, but Elgar and Pienaar had done enough to lay the foundation as the visitors reached 302/8 in their 50 overs.

Kyle Abbott bagged 4/41 to lead the Dolphins attack, but four of their six bowlers went for more than six runs an over as the Knights took control of the match.

In reply, the Dolphins were restricted to 137/7, looking in trouble when the rain came down in the 26th over.

Johann van der Wath and Dillon du Preez bagged three wickets each, with the Dolphins batsmen struggling to build momentum.

Wicketkeeper Darryn Smit top-scored for the hosts with an unbeaten 34 before the players left the field.

The persistent downpour made further play impossible as the Knights bagged their fifth win in nine games. – Sapa
