The new 20-over franchise were left reeling after their opening match in which the Highveld Lions trounced them by 61 runs at Senwes Park on Friday night.

The Impi got off to a disastrous start, losing two wickets for four runs and never really recovered.

The Lions' fielding was outstanding, and they kept the pressure on the newcomers throughout.

Chris Morris achieved the initial breakthrough when he bowled Dominic Hendricks for one in the second over, and in the next over, Ethan O'Reilly had international professional Ryan ten Doeschate out leg before wicket for one.

The Impi lost wickets at regular intervals, and were unable to establish any partnerships.

Ryan Canning made a valiant effort to chase down the runs, scoring 26 off 19 balls, but when he was caught by Morris off Dwaine Pretorius, the Impi were all but dead and buried.

They were all out for 92, with one ball left.

O'Reilly finished with the admirable figures of two for four, including a wicket maiden, and debutant Pretorius took two for nine.

Earlier, the Lions had a patchy innings, but reached a solid 153 for seven, thanks largely to a third wicket partnership of 50

between Neil McKenzie and Alviro Petersen and a stand of 45 between Shane Burger and Chris Morris.

The Lions lost early wickets, but McKenzie and Petersen brought them back into the game, before McKenzie's departure precipitated a clatter of wickets, with the Lions losing five for just 19 runs.

McKenzie made 30 off 25 balls, and Petersen 37 off 36.

But just as the Lions appeared to be heading for a low score, Burger and Morris set about the Impi bowling with a will - Morris smashing Pumelela Matshikwe for two successive sixes and a four in the same over on his way to 31 off 13 balls to stamp the Lions' authority on the match. – Sapa
