IT is understood that former Proteas and Dolphins all-rounder Lance Klusener was one of a number of candidates who were spoken to by the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union yesterday following the resignation of Graham Ford as coach on Tuesday.

This was not, however, confirmed by either the union or Klusener. The chief executive of the union, Jesse Chellan, would only say that he had begun “preparing a list of candidates” for the job of interim coach of the Dolphins.

“There will be no further movement this weekend,” Chellan said yesterday, “but I expect there will be a meeting of the executive early next week, perhaps on Monday, so that we can take another step forward.”

The Dolphins are scheduled to play a SuperSport Series match against the Warriors on Thursday next week, and it would obviously be ideal if an interim coach was appointed before the match started.

Speaking to The Mercury on Thursday, the all-rounder would only say that he would be interested in considering the job if he was approached, although he expressed some concern that he be given the tools to do the job properly.

“I’ve always loved KZN cricket, and I don’t believe the Dolphins belong at the bottom of the food chain,” he said.

Klusener was the last captain of the Dolphins to claim a trophy when he and Martin van Jaarsveld of the Titans shared the SuperSport Series trophy in 2005/6 after the teams had played to a draw. – The Mercury
