Johannesburg - The top-of-the-table T20 Challenge match between the Knights and the Titans was called off without a ball bowled in Bloemfontein on Wednesday night.
A thunderstorm, which broke shortly before the toss, left the outer field soaked at Chevrolet Park, and while the groundsmen worked hard to clear it up, the team captains shook hands and settled for no result.
“It's pretty disappointing, and I think the inner ring is okay, but the outer field is too wet,” said Titans captain Martin van Jaarsveld.
“It's a long competition and we don't want to take chances with anything, especially injury wise.”
His Knights counterpart, Morne van Wyk, agreed that it was too risky to play in the conditions.
“Unfortunately it was a big storm that came through and the top half of the field is very wet,” Van Wyk said.
“The last thing we want is for guys to get injured.”
With overs already being deducted, more than two-and-a-half hours after the scheduled start, Van Jaarsveld said they did not want the match to be reduced to five overs a side - the least required to constitute a result.
“I've played a few of those in the UK,” said the Titans skipper.
“One guy come off and it's over, so it's a complete and total lottery.” The Knights remained top of the standings with 18 points, three ahead of the second-placed Titans. - Sapa
