Despite being plagued by bad light and rain in three of the four days of play, the Lions got the result they needed when they beat the Warriors by 144 runs in their SuperSport Series match at the Wanderers on Sunday.

Overnight on 184/5 in their second innings, the Lions had a lead of 287 runs and declared on 202/8 after the loss of three quick wickets in the morning session.

Set a target of 306, the Warriors were in early trouble when Ethan O'Reilly took two wickets in two balls. Bevan Bennett (1) got a thick edge to Dale Deeb at third slip and O'Reilly then removed the stumps of Jon-Jon Smuts, who failed to score.

Michael Price (40), who top-scored for the Warriors in the first innings with 72, played another steady innings before he was caught behind by Quinton de Kock giving Craig Alexander his first wicket of the day.

None of the other batsmen put up much resistance and O'Reilly bagged his third wicket when he had Justin Kreusch (17) caught at first slip by Zander de Bruyn.

Wickets fell at regular intervals and the visitors were bowled out for 161 in 54.4 overs, just as the sun peeped through the clouds for the first time on Sunday.

O'Reilly finished with 3/39 while Alexander, Shane Burger and Deeb took two apiece.

Burger was named man of the match for his magnificent 114 not out in the Lions' first innings and his total of five wickets in the match.
