The Highveld Lions are hoping to win their match against the Dolphins on Friday and book themselves a berth in the MTN40 cricket semifinal.

Doing so will give them 17 points after four matches and will leave the other two sides in their pool – the Dolphins and the Cape Cobras – needing bonus points victories to catch them.

It is unlikely the Lions will fail to score a single point in their three remaining matches.

A Lions' victory will help to the Cobras, which are pointless after three matches and could at best chase down the Dolphins, on eight points, to secure the runners-up berth in the pool.

The Lions have lost their captain Alviro Petersen, to the Proteas' Test squad.

However, they have impressed this season with the way in which they have built up their depth.

They still have an experienced batting line-up that includes veterans Neil McKenzie and Zander de Bruyn.

The key to the match may lie in the big-hitting hands of Dolphins' opening batsman Loots Bosman.

He has made 243 runs in his last three MTN40 innings, including a 150 off 86 balls last time out.

The Dolphins also have the leading runs scorer in the campaign to date in Imraan Khan, on 258, including a century and two 50s from four innings.

The Cobras are now in a must win situation for the rest of the pool stage.

Their first outing at Newlands against the Titans may give them just the boost they need.

They are also in the fortunate position of having three of their remaining four matches at home.

The Titans are ahead of the Knights on net run rate at the top of Pool A at the moment and will be keeping an eye on the Knights against the Warriors in Bloemfontein.

This is a very tight pool where a Cobras' win at Newlands and a Warriors win in Bloemfontein with a bonus point will put all three Pool A sides on nine points. – Sapa
