Johannesburg – The Highveld Lions were 81 for one in their second-innings at close of play on the second day of their Sunfoil series match against the Dolphins at the Wanderers for an overall lead of 83.

The not out batsmen are Stephen Cook and Zander de Bruyn on 29 and 18 respectively.

The Dolphins started the second day on seven without loss.

But Divan van Wyk got his marching orders in the fifth over of the day, trapped in the crease with only two runs added to his overnight score of five.

Imraan Khan and Jonathan Vandiar set about building the innings with a second-wicket partnership with a 173-ball 121.

Vandiar was looking time imperious, so the manner of his dismissal came as a surprise, slashing at a Chris Morris delivery only to nick it to Gulam Bodi in the gully.

Vandiar's 88-ball half-century, included eight boundaries in a sojourn of two hours.

The next man in, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, never looked totally at ease. And the leg spinner Imran Tahir put the middle-order batsman out of his misery with a full-toss, which Van Jaarsveld missed completely and was trapped plumb in front.

Imraan Khan, 87 off 161-balls, which included 16 fours, pushed the score along, but he finally edged a Zander de Bruyn delivery to the keeper Thami Tsolekile.

There followed a flurry of wickets - David Miller, Daryn Smit, Robbie Frylinck, Kyle Abbott, Dane Paterson and Craig Alexander. The Dolphins had lost their last six wickets for 49 runs.

In the other match at St George's Park, Port Elizabeth, the Warriors entertained the Titans.

The hosts who batted first, could only add five runs to their overnight score of 271 for nine.

In their second spell at the crease the Warriors were 105 without loss at close of play, for an overall lead of 165.

When the umpires called time Michael Price was on 53 and Davy Jacobs on 44.

Earlier, the visitors got off to a shaky start. Tumelo Bodibe faced only eight balls, before Andrew Birch induced him to edge a delivery to Davy Jacobs at first-slip.

Jacques Rudolph and Pieter Malan took the score to 54.

Then without rhyme or reason Malan cut hard at a ball outside off. The ball raced off the bat, but Simon Harmer reacted instinctively and snatched the ball out of the air at third-slip.

Rudolph and Henry Davids knuckled down and compiled a third-wicket partnership of 77.

But Birch, now in full flow, produced a snorter of a delivery, which completely beat Davids for pace and he was castled, the ball sending the middle stump cartwheeling.

Birch then rapped Heino Kuhn on the pads, to give the quickie his third scalp.

Basheer Walters claimed the wicket of danger man Rudolph, six runs short of his century, with a delivery which Rudolph misjudged and lifted to Ingram at point and just to rub salt into the wounds, Walters claimed the wickets of Paul Harris, Ethy Mbhlatati and Rowan Richards - the Titans had lost five wickets for 21 runs.

Walters finished with five for 57, his second first-class “fifer”.

The third match Sunfoil match between the Cobras and the Knights at Boland Park failed to materialise, with the second-day washed out without a toss or a ball being bowled. – Sapa
