Johannesburg – Gerald Majola's disciplinary hearing could start later than initially expected, according to the embattled cricket boss's lawyer, Pumezo David.
The hearing, chaired by advocate Karel Tip, was set to start in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
“The board was informed that the disciplinary hearing of suspended CSA CEO Gerald Majola had commenced on September 28 and was scheduled for completion on October 11,” Cricket SA (CSA) said in a statement after a special general meeting at the weekend.
“The civil case to recover bonuses from Mr Majola and the former chief operating officer, Mr Don McIntosh, would take longer because of the two-year backlog on the court roll.”
David, however, said preliminary proceedings had not yet been completed.
“Preliminary points and technical legal points were taken on Friday, but we did not finish.
“The hearing is supposed to start on Wednesday, but we're expecting a ruling on those points first. If the ruling is not in our favour, the hearing will begin next week, on October 9.”
Majola was suspended in March after a long-running bonus scandal following the 2009 Indian Premier League T20 tournament which was hosted by South Africa.
The Nicholson inquiry, instituted after Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula called for an independent probe, found that R4.7 million in bonuses had been paid to CSA staff without clearance from the board or the remuneration committee. – Sapa
