A meeting between Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and the Cricket SA (CSA) board started behind closed doors in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Members of the media were initially allowed in to hear Mbalula's opening remarks, but the minister said he was not willing to comment until the meeting, which started 90 minutes late, had finished.

“We know the matter we are dealing with is of great importance to South Africans,” Mbalula told the media.

“You all want to know which side we are going, and all that, so if a need arises for a media briefing, you will be informed.

“We have not started the meeting so we have nothing to report to you yet, but I am looking forward to this discussion with CSA.”

Mbalula was to decide after the meeting whether CSA had taken appropriate action in response to a ministerial inquiry into its finances, following a lengthy bonus scandal.

The CSA board said last month it had accepted, in principle, the recommendations made by the inquiry.

Bonuses amounting to R4.7 million were paid to the CSA staff after the federation hosted the 2009 Indian Premier League, but the payments were not cleared by the board or the CSA remuneration committee. – Sapa
