Ryan McLaren eased his way to his third first-class century as the Knights took command of their Supersport Series cricket match against the Titans at Supersport Park on Friday.

The Knights made 400 all out, giving them a first innings lead of 173. McLaren was not out on 133.

The Titans claimed an early wicket, when captain Morne van Wyk was given out leg before wicket to Ethy Mbhalati for 22 off the second ball of the day.

He and Ryan Bailey had shared a fifth wicket stand of 60.

Bailey was joined by McLaren and they set about accumulating runs, putting on 65 for the sixth wicket before Bailey was caught by Martin van Jaarsveld off Shaun von Berg for 86, including 13 boundaries. Von Berg struck again before lunch, with Van Jaarsveld taking the catch to dismiss Michael Erlank for 14.

The Knights went to lunch on 199/7, having added 100 runs for the loss of three wickets in the morning session, with McLaren not out on 44.

He smashed Von Berg for a six after the break to reach his half century.

He and Johan van der Wath batted for much of the afternoon session, enjoying an 89 run partnership off 99 balls.

Morne Morkel finally broke the stand when Van der Wath was caught behind by Heino Kuhn for 30.

Malusi Siboto stuck with McLaren until he had achieved his milestone, which came up off the first ball after tea.

He faced 174 balls, hitting 15 fours and a six. He and Siboto shared a ninth wicket stand of 50 before Siboto was stumped by Kuhn off Henry Davids for 19, including four boundaries.

With just one wicket left, the Titans must have thought they would soon be batting again, but Quinton Friend had other ideas.

He and McLaren put on 67 for the last wicket, to take the Knights to 400, before Von Berg claimed his third wicket when he bowled Friend for 45. McLaren batted for just short of six hours and faced 210 balls.

With only two balls bowled at the start of the second innings, play was called off for the day because of bad light. The Titans had one run, from a bye. – Sapa
