Vernon Philander went past the landmark 50 wickets for the first-class cricket season on his way to a career best 7-61 on the second day of the SuperSport Series match between the Cape Cobras and the Knights at Newlands on Friday.
Playing in his fourth SuperSport Series match this season, he has taken 22 wickets in the four-day format.
In spite of Philander's outstanding form, the Cobras still have a lot of work to do to overtake the Knights' first innings total of 345.
Rilee Rossouw batted through the remainder of the Knights' innings to finish unbeaten on 144 (367 balls, 15 fours and a six).
It was his 11th first-class century and his second this season.
The Cobras lost wickets at regular intervals in their reply and finished the day on 118/3 for an overall deficit of 227 runs.
JP Duminy was unbeaten on 26 and Mark Boucher on 19.
In the other match at Kingsmead, Divan van Wyk and Imraan Khan shared a 161-run opening partnership for the Dolphins as they ended day two on 198 for three against the Lions.
Van Wyk (86) and captain Khan (62) were both removed by seamer Chris Morris (2-39), who had also recorded a half-century earlier in the day.
The Dolphins looked to be in control, but lost Vaughn van Jaarsveld (13), lbw to Cliffe Deacon, shortly before the close.
Hashim Amla was 12 not out and David Miller on six, still 220
runs behind.
With centuries from Neil McKenzie (108) and Temba Bavuma (121) on day one, the Lions had resumed on 303 for six.
Morris (62 from 67 balls) shared a half-century stand (53 runs) with Dominic Hendricks (32) for the eighth wicket before the visitors were all out for 418.
Kyle Abbott took his first five-wicket haul of the season (5-76).
For the second consecutive day, the match between the Warriors and the Titans at Buffalo Park in East London had to be abandoned.
