Cape Cobras coach Richard Pybus, who quit his job this week, has said that he was undermined in his job by a range of issues to do with chief executive Andre Odendaal and the franchise.

These issues had made continuing in the position untenable, Pybus added.

The experienced coach’s resignation came a couple of days after the Cobras’ final T20 match of the season – a defeat against the Dolphins which saw them slip to fifth position on the T20 Challenge log. As a result they missed out on the play-offs.

Pybus said that he was going away on holiday with his family, and would not be available for comment.

Western Cape Cricket CEO Andre Odendaal said yesterday that he had received Pybus’s resignation letter, and that it would be discussed at a board meeting on Monday.

The coach’s resignation came as a surprise since the team had won three trophies out of a possible six in the past two seasons under him. However, even though his effectiveness as a coach had been widely lauded, a range of issues which had been simmering within the Cobras squad led to a player delegation recently meeting with Odendaal. The issues included what some players termed “questionable selections”, not giving young local players opportunities and the granting of a new two-year contract to captain Justin Kemp, while some believed he had not been performing consistently enough.- Weekend Argus
