Durban - The domestic one-day Cup cricket match between the Dolphins and the Highveld Lions was washed out in Durban on Wednesday.

The visitors, who won the toss and batted first, were on 166 for four after 31 overs at an overcast Kingsmead when the players were taken off the field at 5.15pm.

There were signs that the match would resume after the rain abated close to two hours later, but after the field was mopped up and a resumption time set, the wet weather returned forcing umpires Dennis Smith and Karl Hurter to declare the game a no result.

It was a third consecutive home match for the Dolphins that was decided by the rain, although one of them was played in Pietermaritzburg.

The two points nonetheless propel them joint top of the table on six points, alongside the Cape Cobras and the Warriors.

The Lions, meanwhile, remain bottom of the of the log after heavy losses in their two games - they were looking on course for a substantial total at Kingsmead.

Jonathan Vandiar hit 58 and Gulam Bodi made 45 after captain captain Alviro Petersen had earlier won the toss and elected to bat.

After the skipper fell cheaply, the two former Dolphins players put 75 together, before Bodi was sent on his way by an ex-Lions bowler, Robbie Frylinck.

Vandiar went past 50 in 56 deliveries, but fell to Kyle Abbott, who was the pick of the bowlers with 26/2.

Quinton de Kock (8) fell shortly afterwards and Neil McKenzie (29 not out) and Zander de Bruyn (1 not out) were unbeaten when the rain arrived. - Sapa
