A superb display of death bowling from fast bowler Rusty Theron kept the Warriors in the race for the Standard Bank Pro20 playoffs as the visitors secured a six-run win over the Knights in Kimberley on Friday night.

The Warriors made 159/2 after winning the toss, led by a solid half-century from Justin Kreusch.

Dean Elgar anchored the run chase for the hosts who eventually needed 11 runs off the last over.

Theron, however, gave away only four runs, removing Johan van der Wath and Ryan McLaren in the process, to help his side climb two places in the standings to third.

Elgar and Rilee Rossouw combined in a 63-run stand for the second wicket after Reeza Hendricks was removed by veteran fast bowler Makhaya Ntini for 18 runs.

Kreusch broke the partnership in the 14th over, with Ntini taking the catch at short fine leg to dismiss Rossouw for 30 off 25 balls.

AJ Pienaar, who contributed 19, put up a fight but Theron sent his leg stump tumbling in the 18th over.

Elgar smashed an unbeaten 64 from 49 deliveries, for his maiden career half-century, but to no avail as the Knights remained the only team without a win in the competition.

Theron led the Warriors' attack, returning 3/26 to receive the Master Blaster Bowler award.

Earlier, Davey Jacobs and Ashwell Prince had fallen early when McLaren removed both Knights' openers in the second over, but JJ Smuts and Kreusch formed a recovery.

The pair shared 100 runs for the third wicket before left-arm seamer Jandre Coetzee had Kreusch caught at long off by Van der Wath.

Kreusch, named Master Blaster Batsman, made 57 runs off 42 balls, including five fours and three sixes, for his third half-century.

Coetzee struck again three balls later when McLaren took a stunning catch at extra cover to send Smuts walking for 46 off 35

deliveries.

McLaren removed Lyall Meyer and Andrew Birch with the last two balls of the innings for a return of 4/16. Van der Wath took 2/28 and Coetzee bagged 2/31. – Sapa
