Star all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt has been dropped from the Cape Cobras squad for this weekend’s crunch Twenty Challenge matches after failing a dope test.

It emerged on Thursday that Kleinveldt, who has played two T20 Internationals for the Proteas, returned a positive sample for a “specified substance”.

The test was conducted by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, but it declined to give further details.

Cobras chief executive Andre Odendal confirmed on Thursday that Kleinveldt, a fast bowler and hard-hitting batsmen, has been dropped for the Cape side’s clash against the Warriors at Newlands tonight, as well as Sunday’s important match against the Titans in Centurion.

“Rory has been left out the squad until we receive further instructions from the South African Cricketers’ Association on how to move forward,” Odendal told the Cape Times last night.

“Saca will explain the process to us and we will take it from there. In the meantime, Rory will not be playing any cricket,” he added.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) defines a “specified substance” as one that is “more susceptible to a credible, non-doping explanation.”

They can be found in medicinal products and are susceptible to unintentional use. The punishment for a positive test ranges from a warning to a two-year ban.

Kleinveldt, who turned 29 on Thursday, can also ask for a “B” sample to be tested. – Cape Times
