The Titans made a decisive bid for SuperSport Series honours with a dominant display against the Dolphins in Centurion on Friday.

The visitors, bottom feeders in the first-class competition, were 330 runs behind in their second innings, with three wickets in hand, when stumps were drawn on day two.

Trailing the Cape Cobras by less than a point ahead of the final round of matches, the Titans looked set to lift the title, with the Cobras well held by the Highveld Lions at the Wanderers.

The Titans' pace attack were relentless in their dismantling of the visitors.

Following on, the Dolphins were restricted to 81/7 in another poor showing on a day which saw more than half the overs lost to rain and bad light.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld again top scored with 19 runs as the Dolphins were left fighting an impossible battle with two days still to play.

Titans paceman Ethy Mbhalati led the way with 3/27, and he was well backed by Rowan Richards who took 2/19.

Earlier, after resuming their first innings at 2/5 in the morning session, the Dolphins were bundled out for only 62 runs.

Van Jaarsveld put up the only minor resistance of the innings, making 26 at faster than a run a ball, but the Titans seam attack tore through the line-up.

Richards, Mbhalati and CJ de Villiers each bagged three scalps to lead the charge.

The Cobras, meanwhile, were hampered by rain and left hoping for the skies to clear in a desperate attempt to secure a vital win.

Only 38 overs of play was possible on day two at the Bullring, with the home side reaching 358/6 at the close.

After returning to the crease at 228/4, the Lions made steady progress when play was possible, with middle-order batsman Themba Bavuma contributing 64 runs.

Cliffe Deacon was on 40 not out and Chris Morris was unbeaten on 29 at stumps.

Spin bowler Dane Piedt had taken three wickets in the innings, bagging one of only two scalps to fall on day two, but went for more than five runs an over as the Lions batsmen frustrated the visiting attack.

In Port Elizabeth, Warriors skipper Arno Jacobs made his 16th career century to give the home side the edge against the Knights.

Jacobs contributed 152 runs from 183 balls, paving the way as the Warriors were bowled out for 318, taking a 78-run first-innings lead.

Seamer Johan van der Wath returned 5/61 to remove the tail, but not without trouble.

The last six Warriors batsmen made only 30 runs between them, but they stuck around for nearly 40 overs as they were held up by the stubborn Warriors captain.

The Knights lost two early wickets in their second innings.

The visitors were on 17/2, still 61 runs behind, when stumps were drawn 20 overs early for bad light. – Sapa
