Divan van Wyk and Daryn Smit fell just short of centuries as the Dolphins made 310 at home to South African Cricket Series pacesetters Cape Cobras on Friday.

Opener Van Wyk was bowled by South Africa star Vernon Philander for 95 after facing 210 balls and striking 14 fours during 345 minutes at the crease on a second day cut short by bad light.

Middle-order Smit reached 94 at the City Oval in the KwaZulu-Natal capital when he was stumped by Dane Vilas off the bowling of Alistair Gray, having hit 16 fours and one six off 199 balls in a 297-minute stand.

Cody Chetty was the other Dolphins batsman to impress, contributing a 59 that included seven fours and one six, as the team reached a satisfactory total after slumping to 25-4 before the 11-over mark.

Seamer Rory Kleinveldt, a newcomer to the South Africa squad for three Tests in Australia from November, was the leading Cobras wicket-taker with 5-54 and the visitors from Cape Town reached 66-0 when play ended. – AFP
