East London - The Warriors beat the Highveld Lions by 45 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method in a domestic One-day Cup match at Buffalo Park, East London, on Wednesday to remain at the top of the log.

The hosts dismissed the Lions for 218 in 49.3 overs, then saw the target adjusted to 208 off 44 overs after rain fell during the interval.

The Warriors were well on their way to victory on 83 for one after 17 overs when play was once again delayed by rain with the target adjusted to 195 in 40 overs.

A magnificent catch by Aaron Phangiso got rid of Jon Jon Smuts early on in the chase.

Smuts lofted Richard Das Neves to the long-on boundary, and Phangiso grabbed the ball virtually on the ropes, lobbed it inside the field and caught it again.

After a number of replays the third umpire was convinced that Phangiso had not placed his foot on the ropes.

Warriors skipper Colin Ingram went on the attack with opener Arno Jacobs as they launched into the Lions' bowling attack.

With the Warriors on 174 for one and well ahead of the required rate, rain again fell, with play being called off.

Ingram finished unbeaten on 94 confirming his status as one of the best limited-overs batsmen in South Africa. He scored 12 fours and hit a huge six off Phangiso out of the ground.

Jacobs, who had an unbeaten stand of 71 runs played some delicate late cuts and scored seven fours in his fine knock.

The two added 168 for the second wicket, only two runs short of the second-wicket record for the franchise.

Earlier a 91-run fourth wicket partnership between veteran Neil McKenzie and Jean Symes helped the Highveld Lions to their disappointing total.

McKenzie finished his innings on 87 runs off 108 deliveries while Symes bowed out on 44.

Once the duo was separated at 124 for four, wickets fell at regular intervals, with only Thami Tsolekile (26) giving McKenzie support.

Makhaya Ntini started off with a maiden with the batsmen finding him hard to score off.

He conceded only 18 runs and picked up two excellent wickets in his six overs.

Ntini clean-bowled Quinton de Kock who only moments earlier survived a run out attempt when he scuttled through for a short single.

Smuts took 2-33 in seven overs while Rusty Theron finished with 2-33 in 8.3 overs. - Sapa
