The Mohamed Salah contract saga took a cryptic turn on Sunday, as the Liverpool legend made some bizarre comments after his side’s 2-0 Premier League win over champions Manchester City at Anfield.
A 12th minute goal from Cody Gakpo and a penalty from Salah in the final quarter secured all three points for the table toppers, as they moved 11 points clear of champions City.
Though City enjoyed 57% of possession, they did nothing with it as Liverpool were by far the dominant team on the night as the visitors never looked like breaching the Liverpool defence.
Last week, the 32-year-old Salah said he was ‘more out than in’ at Liverpool as he hadn’t received a new contract at Liverpool yet.
Salah's enjoying every minute, or is he?
After the City game, Salah said: “It's very special. I said before, I don't take it for granted. I'm enjoying every minute here. It feels like home. So, yeah, it's a special feeling. It always is to score at Anfield and win games.
“Of course, honestly, in my head, it was like this is my problem, until now, the last City game I play for Liverpool, so I'm just gonna enjoy it.
“The atmosphere was incredible, so I'm enjoying every second here. And yeah, finally we just (hopefully) win the league and see what will happen.”
On the face of it, it may look like Salah is simply saying he’s living in the moment. However, following his comments last week it’s difficult to imagine he is not referring to his contract issues.
In fact, Salah’s comments last week drew criticism from all quarters including former Liverpool-turned-pundit Jamie Carragher.
The 46-year-old Carragher who spent his entire 17-year career at Liverpool as he racked up 508 appearances and no Premier League titles, did not take kindly to the comments of Salah as he spoke on Monday Night Football.
“Of course there's been discussions. Right now, there's obviously a big difference in valuation, how Salah and his agent value themselves, in terms of length of contract, and how Liverpool do,” said Carragher.
