Pietermaritzburg’s senior women’s soccer team is set to showcase their talent at the Grannies Soccer World Cup in Tzaneen, Limpopo.

The tournament, scheduled to take place from April 2 to 5 at Nkowankowa Stadium, will bring together over 500 participants, with teams from across the world, including the USA, United Kingdom, France, Morocco, East Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and various South African provinces.

Msunduzi Mayor, Mzimkhulu Thebolla, extended his best wishes to the team, encouraging them to bring the trophy home.

“We wish our team all the best and hope they return with the cup,” said Thebolla.

The Pietermaritzburg squad consists of 24 determined women aged between 55 and 75 who have defied age stereotypes by actively engaging in competitive soccer. Their participation in this prestigious event not only highlights their love for the sport but also promotes an active and healthy lifestyle among seniors.

The tournament aims to celebrate the passion and resilience of elderly women in sports, fostering unity and empowerment through soccer. The Pietermaritzburg team has been training rigorously and is hopeful about making a mark on the international stage.
