Stellenbosch FC came from a goal down to claim a comfortable 3-1 win over TS Galaxy FC at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday to advance to the MTN8 semi-finals.
The Rockets came out of the blocks firing and took the lead early in the 18th minute when midfielder Kamogelo Sebelebele dribbled past a slew of defenders before unleashing a long-range shot from outside the box which found the back of the net.
The goal, however, seemed to shock the Cape Winelands side into action as they started to push forward in search of an equaliser. It did not take long before Jayden Adams levelled matters after burying the ball in the back of the net after a beautiful long ball from Devin Titus in the 25th minute of the game.
As the first half progressed, Steve Barker’s Stellenbosch continued to put the pressure on the visitors, with Adams and Rayners proving to be problematic for the Galaxy defence with their pace.
As Stellenbosch continued to press forward, Titus unleashed a long-range shot from outside the box in the 38th minute, but Galaxy goalkeeper Wensten van der Linde made a crucial to keep things at 1-1.
Stellenbosch eventually took the lead on the stroke of halftime thanks to a headed goal from midfielder Andre De Jong.
Galaxy enjoyed more possession in the second half, but struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Stellenbosch, however, scored a third goal in the 57th minute through defender Fawaaz Basadien after some clever play from the Cape Winelands side found him free inside the box.
Stellenbosch continued to push forward and could have scored more goals towards the end of the game, but failed to convert their chances.
Galaxy finished the game with 10 men after defender Mcbeth Mahlangu was red carded in the 88th minute after elbowing Kyle Jurgens.
Stellenbosch held on for a win and joined Soweto giants Orlando Pirates in the MTN 8 semi-finals.
