The last seven seasons have followed an all-too-familiar script, with Mamelodi Sundowns dominating all challengers. They have won a record-breaking seven consecutive league titles, and they have not just won — they have done so with remarkable ease, shattering several records along the way.

They have found worthy challengers in Orlando Pirates, but as the 15-point gap they hold over the Buccaneers remains unchanged due to other commitments in recent weeks, no other club has stepped up — even to claim the scraps.

Stellenbosch FC have had a fairly decent season so far, but by the standards they set last season, they have not quite lived up to expectations or shown significant improvement. However, this is somewhat understandable.

Steve Barker has had to constantly rebuild a squad that has been competing in both continental and domestic competitions while losing key players to direct rivals. It was always going to be a tall order for them this season, but they still have a chance to finish third.

A 23-point gap separates first and third place. While Sundowns boast undeniable quality in their squad, such a large point difference — despite only one match separating them from Stellenbosch — raises questions about whether inconsistency is the issue or if other clubs are simply not being rewarded for their investment in long-term projects.

The rest of the table has been highly competitive, with teams exchanging blows. From the bottom half, some have manoeuvred their way into the coveted top-eight positions, yet no club can confidently claim to have secured their current spot.

Only six points separate third-placed Stellenbosch from Kaizer Chiefs, who, despite their underwhelming season, remain on track to return to the MTN8 competition after missing out last year.

SuperSport United, however, are at risk of relegation, having averaged just a point per game from their 22 matches played. But given the unpredictability of the season so far, if they can put together a good run of results, they could quickly climb the table, as they are only seven points behind Chiefs.

Squad quality and depth have played a key role, as seen with Pirates and Sundowns, but overall, most clubs have struggled with inconsistency this season.

Aside from eleventh-placed Magesi FC, who have picked up 12 points after previously being written off, only Marumo Gallants (nine points) have collected more in their last five matches, and this extends as high as sixth-placed Polokwane City.

As a result, Owen da Gama and his charges now find themselves just three points behind Chiefs. The remainder of the season promises more twists and turns.

While the league has been unpredictable and exciting, it can be argued that the lack of standout performers has been due more to mistakes and inconsistency than fierce competition.
