Durban — Several areas in KwaZulu-Natal have lost power supply due to inclement weather conditions in the province.
In a brief statement, Eskom in KwaZulu-Natal said stormy weather has led to disruptions in power supply to numerous parts of KZN.
Eskom stated that currently, electricity users in the following areas are impacted:
- Eshowe
- Mandeni (Mandini)
- Nkandla
- Stanger
- Bergville
- Estcourt
- Glencoe
- Osizweni
- Paulpiet (Paulpietersburg)
- Kokstad
- Margate
“Technical teams are attending to the outages, but customers are requested to remain patient as the nature of the damage and the weather conditions are likely to lead to longer restoration times,” Eskom said.
Additionally, the entity urged the public to stay clear of all fallen or damaged infrastructure and to report dangerous situations to their local authorities or to Eskom by using the MyEskom Customer App, Alfred the Chatbot, USSD platform (*120*37566#) and the Eskom Contact Centre (08600 ESKOM / 37566).
This week, the South African Weather Service (Saws) issued a yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive rain valid for Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the Saws, areas expected to be affected include Alfred Duma - Indaka, Alfred Duma - Ladysmith, Dannhauser, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma - Underberg, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Inkosi Langalibalele - Estcourt, Inkosi Langalibalele - Sobabili, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mpofana - Giants Castle, Mpofana - Mooi River, Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Newcastle, Nkandla Nquthu, Okhahlamba, Richmond, Msunduzi, Ubuhlebezwe, Ulundi, uMlalazi, uMngeni, uMshwathi, uMuziwabantu and uMvoti.
The disruptive rain was expected to lead to localised flooding of roads, low-lying bridges and settlements over most parts of KZN from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday.
Saws said widespread showers and thundershowers are expected across KZN Wednesday and Thursday, this will cause disruptive rain leading to localised flooding. Significant rains have been observed Monday and still expected Tuesday afternoon, becoming more severe and disruptive from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday.
