In an era where nostalgia reigns supreme in Hollywood, fans of cult classic films can rejoice as the long-awaited sequel to “Romy and Michele's High School Reunion” has been officially confirmed.

After years of speculations and whispers in the industry, it has now been revealed that Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are set to reprise their iconic roles as the titular pair, Romy White and Michele Weinberger.

According to various online reports, the deal is reportedly in the final stages with 20th Century Studios, with both actresses not only returning to play their beloved characters but also assuming the role of executive producers for the sequel.

Released in 1997, the original story revolves around two inseparable best friends, Romy White (Sorvino) and Michele Weinberger (Kudrow).

The two unfulfilled 29-year-olds choose to pretend to be successful to impress their old classmates during their tenth-anniversary high school reunion.

The sequel, which is slated for a June release date, will see Tim Federle, known for his work on “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” and “Better Nate Than Never”, helm the project.

The original, directed by David Mirkin, grossed approximately $29 million (R546 million) against a budget of around $20 million.

Although it did not achieve blockbuster status, it carved out a lasting place in pop culture with its quotable lines, fashion-forward moments and relatable storylines.

Robin Schiff, the original author of “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” and showrunner of the popular Netflix series “Emily in Paris”, returned to pen the sequel.

Laurence Mark, who produced the original movie, returns to the producer's chair. He will be joined by Barry Kemp, creator of the iconic 1980s series “Newhart”.

Other original cast members are expected to reprise their roles, but nobody else is confirmed as of yet.

The excitement among fans is palpable, with many taking to platforms like Reddit to express their enthusiasm.

One user, @marchbook wrote: “I want this to be good because the cast of the first film was, is and always will be stellar. They deserve to be able to kill it with a fun, amazing script.”

Another fan, @jenny-spinning, reminisced: “Ahhh one of my ultimate comfort movies. I’ve been watching it weekly as of late.”

Additionally, @SizzleanQueen expressed her desire for actor Alan Cumming to join the cast: “The effervescent Alan Cumming better be in it!”
