A young social entrepreneur is making significant strides in uplifting his community through the power of education and skill development.

Khayelihle Nkabinde, 27, from Uvongo on the south coast, has turned inspiration from his grandfather into a transformative mission for local youth.

As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Founder of the non-profit organisation Dream Big Stay Humble, Nkabinde is dedicated to nurturing potential in young people who often find themselves marginalized.

Founded in 2017, Dream Big Stay Humble seeks to empower students and unemployed youth by equipping them with essential skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as well as entrepreneurial practices.

With the aim of preparing young individuals for the complexities of the 21st-century economy, the organisation runs various skills development programmes that combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

One of the key initiatives launched by the organisation is a tech-hub located in the township of Lamontville.

The hub features a computer lab where young participants can engage in an array of courses, including basic computer coding, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and even basic cyber security.

By imparting these skills, Dream Big Stay Humble aims to enhance the employability of its beneficiaries and empower them to navigate the digital landscape of the modern workplace.

Moreover, the organisation extends its support beyond skills training. Those seeking employment receive guidance in securing jobs once they complete the programmes. For aspiring entrepreneurs, the Dream Entrepreneurship Society offers financial management training, helping young individuals to launch and sustain their own businesses effectively.

With a dedicated team of 15 members, which includes an executive team along with project managers and coordinators, Nkabinde ensures that the various initiatives run smoothly and effectively.

Nevertheless, funding remains a notable challenge as the organisation seeks to grow and impact more lives. “To overcome this, we optimise resources and focus on impactful programs that maintain quality while reaching as many beneficiaries as possible. Through collaborations, in-kind sponsorships, and support from philanthropic individuals and sectors, Dream Big Stay Humble continues its quest for financial sustainability.

Nkabinde attributes his drive to serve others to the legacy of his grandfather, a selfless pastor whose example deeply influenced his commitment to creating opportunities for youth in underserved communities. Describing himself as ambitious, driven, and sociable, Nkabinde boasts a natural gift for connecting people and fostering collaboration, especially within the business space.

Raised in a close-knit community, he was instilled with strong family values and a love for service from an early age. Nkabinde’s academic journey began at Port Shepstone High School, where he matriculated in 2015. His pursuit of knowledge has been driven by self-learning alongside a robust focus on leadership and innovation.

With a vision firmly set on expanding his organisation's reach, Nkabinde is determined to transform Dream Big Stay Humble into a sustainable, self-operating entity that can significantly impact even more youth. “I envision myself continuing to build partnerships and champion innovation in social entrepreneurship,” he said.
