Gospel artist Andile kaMajola says he ready to break the ceiling by becoming the first artist in his genre to win Song of the Year contest on Ukhozi FM this month.

His song, Liphakanyisiwe, has already made history by featuring in the top three of the songs with most votes. He was speaking to Sunday Tribune on the sidelines of the launch of an engagement with faith and religious leaders as part of his consultative meetings with key role players in the preservation of Amahubo (songs), in Pietermaritzburg this week.

The discussions, he said, are aimed at fostering collaboration and gather insights from influential figures within the faith community, recognizing their vital role in promoting and sustaining this cherished musical tradition.

He expressed a belief that the input from faith and religious leaders is essential for understanding the spiritual significance of the book aptly named Uhambo lwamahubo which contains church hymns and its impact on communities.

The pastor said he was hoping that by bringing together diverse voices, there would be a unified approach to celebrate and preserve this integral aspect of South African culture.

“In a world where cultural heritage is often overlooked, it is crucial to preserve our musical legacy for the younger generation.

"Songs are the heartbeat of our culture. Through music, we tell our stories, share our struggles, and celebrate our victories. It is our responsibility to ensure that these narratives continue to inspire and guide future generations", kaMajola said.

He indicated that the book had been presented to senior clergy and pastors from different churches including the South African Council of Churches and its senior reverend Dr. Frank Chikane.

He described publishing of the book as something of a milestone, noting that the one and only time that a book of praises was published was by Shembe Church.

Regarding making the top three on the station with the largest listenership, KaMajola said he was excited about reaching such a height.

“When considering the genres that dominate airwaves whether they be amapiano, kwaito or maskandi, it is quite humbling to have been nominated and to have received a number of votes that put me among the best songs,” said the gospel artist.

Ukhozi FM boast the highest listenership within the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) with 7,9 million listeners as of July this year and the song of the year contest draws a large listenership.
