As the final phase of the line-up for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) has been announced, excitement has reached fever pitch for lovers of the iconic music extravaganza.
This year's line-up is a mixture of artists that will cater to the musical tastes of all festival goers, from amapiano to jazz, soul, house, and some R&B.
In the CTIFJ's rich line-up is world-renowned record producer and DJ Black Coffee, who teams up with fellow international traveller Pietermaritzburg-born jazz pianist Nduduzo Makhathini. The two released a collab genre-defying EP titled "Muye", and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival will mark the first time they'd be performing music from this project accompanied by an orchestra, horns and vocalists who will be belting out some of the tunes from the duo.
The legendary former Bongo Maffin member, Thandiswa Mazwai, returns to the CTIJF stage. Known for her powerful voice and groundbreaking fusion of jazz, soul, and traditional African rhythms, Thandiswa has captured hearts worldwide. Her music continues to transcend borders, and we’re excited to welcome her back to the festival.
Fans would have to keep wondering from which albums she would be dipping into from her prolific catalogue that stretches almost 20 years since her debut release, "Zabalaza", in 2006 and her latest release, "Sankofa". Her music continues to blend jazz, traditional African rhythms and soul.
Joining the dance floor is Kelvin Momo, who is heralded as the pioneer of "private school amapiano". Momo comes with plenty of hits to the CTIJF stage, including Intyatyambo, "Ska Bhaile", "Mang Dakiwe" and many other party starters.
Bassist, composer, and sonic explorer Benjamin Jeptha stands at the forefront of contemporary jazz, effortlessly fusing African rhythms with modern jazz and hip-hop. Joined by the deeply evocative Kujenga, this performance will be a masterclass in groove, harmony, and improvisation—an immersive experience that speaks to both heart and intellect.
American R&B star who fuses soul and jazz into her sound, Ari Lennox, also joins the CTIFJ stage with her electrifying stage performances.
Other international acts are American-Jamaican musician Masego, whose stage name is from the Tswana language, meaning "blessings". The artist who juggles in R&B, soul, funk and hip hop has South African connections and has spoken numerous times about exploring his South African roots.
Another act that's making a return to the CTIJF stage is British acid jazz pioneers Incognito, who blend soul, funk, garage and jazz.
Known for timeless hits like “Still a Friend of Mine” and their rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”, their dynamic performances transcend generations.
As the line-up continues to crystallise, tickets are fast running out, especially the full-weekend passes with access to the four stages. There are limited tickets available for Friday and Saturday.
