The award winning make-up artist, Simphiwe Mbatha, bagged two DStv Content Creator Awards on Saturday evening at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Mbatha’s colourful and African-inspired make-up creative looks earned her the title of the Beauty Award and the Spirit of Africa Award, which is a new category for the third instalment of the DStv Content Creator Awards.
The Spirit of Africa Award was presented by Amarula Premium African Gin, for which Mbatha received an additional cash prize of R20 000.
Popularly known as “Colour Me Simphiwe”, Mbatha beamed at her awards as she has cemented and positioned herself in the content creation industry.
In her acceptance speech, the self-taught make-up artist mentioned the inspiration behind her career as a content creator.
"When I started creating the brand ‘Colour Me Simphiwe’, I always thought about two things: what’s the message I want to send, and number one, is to just live authentically as yourself,“ said Mbatha, tearfully.
She highlighted the social media pressures content creators continuously encountered.
“I think it’s so easy when you create content, or are an influencer, to get wrapped up in pressure to be someone. I try all the time to convey my story as authentically as it is to me,” said Mbatha.
Mbatha’s extraordinary artistic make-up looks grew her followership online, with a lot of her videos gaining global prominence.
Hence, she spoke about how her creative work and content represent her African heritage.
“The second thing that is also important to me is there’s so much beauty in Africa. People are convinced that Africa is one country, but it is a continent of 54 countries, namely with languages, diversity, music and talent. I love what I do guys, and I hope you guys know what I do takes time.
“I will always take the time to tell a beautiful story of Africa. I am appreciative again to God because I never thought I would be here. So, thank you again,” said Mbatha.
With legendary broadcaster and media personality Anele Mdoda hosting the award ceremony, she surely kept the audience engaged as performances from Bontle Modiselle Dance Studio, Mandisi, Nina Hastie, Cassidy Nicholson, Lasizwe, Christall Kay and drag artists Manila von Teez and Ina Propriette entertained the crowd.
Head of Digital Content at MultiChoice South Africa, Charis Coleman, said African content creation has made great strides locally and globally.

The event founder, Manuela Dias de Deus, said the hosting of the third edition of the DStv Content Creator Awards is a milestone.

Among other winners was content creator, Grace Mondlanda, who won the Emerging Creator Award. Sinoyolo Sifo “The Cooking Husband” grabbed two awards - the DStv Content Creator of the Year Award, for which he received R20 000, and the Foodie Award.
