The much-anticipated Lemo Fest 2024 made a spectacular comeback, solidifying its reputation as a cultural powerhouse in Bloemfontein, Free State, and continuing to be a vital driver of local economic growth.
Following the remarkable success of last year’s festival, the weekend’s Discover the magic of Lemo Fest 2024, where music and culture unite to empower local communities in Bloemfontein. events dazzled attendees with exciting performances and a celebratory atmosphere.
The Star was part of the festival that unfolded over two thrilling days, featuring the Lovers & Friends Concert and Gin & Jazz, each event contributing to an unforgettable experience.
The Lovers & Friends Concert took centre stage first, drawing in crowds with the smooth sounds of R&B and Afro Soul.
Fans were treated to memorable performances from celebrated artists including Lloyiso, Big Zulu, Sjava, and DJ Young, creating an atmosphere ripe with love, music, and affection, which was ideal for couples and friends alike.
Following closely on its heels was the Gin & Jazz event, a sophisticated showcase that paid homage to the legends of the genre.
Notable artists Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Mandisi Dyantyis, and Bhudaza performed, honouring icons such as Tshepo Tsola, Hugh Masekela, and Miriam Makeba.
The event masterfully blended high-calibre jazz music with an enticing gin-tasting experience, inviting attendees to indulge in the best the festival had to offer.
Freddie Kenney, executive chairperson of Kenworth Group, articulated the festival’s overarching vision.
“The R50 million-plus invested into the festival aims at making it a catalyst to turn townships into investment places and youths into entrepreneurs, as well as to change the mindset that townships are crime hubs. Tying in with the mission and vision to create investor opportunities, it was fitting to adopt the slogan ‘Reya Kasi’ (we are going to the township),” he said.
However, the festival was not without its moments of controversy.
Social media buzzed after Lloyiso Gijana expressed his frustrations at the Lovers & Friends concert, citing issues of feeling undervalued and concerns over timing.
In a subsequent statement, festival organisers clarified that the matter had been resolved amicably.
“Following the on-stage incident involving Lloyiso at the Lovers & Friends Concert during Lemo Fest 2024, we would like to confirm that the matter was amicably resolved. Shortly after the incident, Lloyiso expressed his sincere gratitude for being part of the 2nd edition of Lemo Fest. He also offered a heartfelt apology to the Lemo Fest patrons, the festival organisers, and his fellow performers,” the statement read.
In a display of unity, Lloyiso later shared the stage with Kenney and fellow artist Nathi to perform the song “Asilwi nabantu, silwa nemimoya”.
As Lemo Fest concluded, the ethos of the festival remained clear.
“As Lemo Fest, we remain dedicated to our mandate of using music and culture as tools to bring people together and uplift the community. Our festival is built on the values of unity, respect, and empowerment, and we will continue to strive towards creating a platform where artists, audiences, and local businesses can thrive together.”
They further expressed a continued commitment to being a force for economic development, cultural expression, and social cohesion within the local community, with hopes of welcoming everyone to future events rich with these core values.
