Johannesburg - City of Joburg says it has taken taken action following the security alert by the US Embassy warning of a potential terrorist attack in the city, particularly the Sandton area, over the weekend.
Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse said the US consul-general in Johannesburg, Vincent Spera, had contacted her to inform her of their detection of a potential attack in Joburg.
“In order to ensure that the City is well-informed and prepared for any eventuality, I have spoken with the Gauteng Provincial South African Police Service (SAPS) Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, requesting that any and all information and intelligence be shared with the City.
“The Provincial Commissioner has assured me that the necessary measures have been put in place and that nothing will be left to chance.”
Phalatse said she had met with the MMC for Public Safety, David Tembe, and the acting chief of the Joburg Metropolitan Police Department, Thulani Khanyile, who had advised that visible policing resources had been deployed to the Sandton area.
“I have further requested the City’s Joint Operations Committee to provide a full list of events taking place in Joburg over the coming days which will be shared with law enforcement authorities and National Government,” Phalatse said
She said that the multi-party government had prioritised safety and security, and would avail any resources and support required by the SAPS and national government to ensure the safety of Joburg residents and visitors.
