The DA in Gauteng has vowed to oppose all the budget pronouncements by the provincial government.

The party on Wednesday held a media briefing spelling out their intentions to boycott Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s budget today, saying they were not intended to improve the lives of Gauteng residents.

“The Gauteng government continues to do some of the same things they have been doing by putting budgets there that just spend and do not really improve people's lives. The budgets that are there, are not aiding or growing the economy but the budget out there is not going to be siding or addressing the challenges including our schools, our hospitals and our safety and security.

“In fact, what we are seeing now is the continuation of a trend of the so-called priorities which Panyaza is using to boost himself up,” said DA Gauteng leader, Solly Msimanga.

Msimanga, alongside other DA leaders, Fred Nel and Mike Moriarty, have taken a hardline stance against the ANC-led Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) since the ANC snub following behind-the-scenes talks with the DA that fell out last month.

Since then, the DA indicated that it will play its role as the official opposition to Lesufi’s seventh administration.

Last month, Lesufi accused the DA of being greedy and wanting to dictate to the ANC on how to form the GPU.

IOL at the time reported that Lesufi had unveiled his provincial executive dominated largely by ANC Members of Executive Council (MECs), joined by three executives representing the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Patriotic Alliance (PA), and Rise Mzansi.
