It’s official!

The House of Pink Volume 1 is shaking things up in Newton as the Market Theatre hosts its first drag show this weekend.

This fabulous and lush showcase is a collaboration between House of Pink Volume 1 director and actor Lebohang Toka and the Thami Dish Foundation.

Showcasing the best of the best Drag Queens of Mzansi, the stunning Tim Mogogole, also known as M’s D’vine Fabulous, alongside the stunning Chris Williams also known as Kitana Klitorus, the diva of all diva’s Shenay O’Brien, the kaleidoscope of drag Donovan Yaards and the fabulous male dancers Hugo Madeleyn and Wesley Davids .

“Celebrating Pride Month with House of Pink Volume 1 is an ode to the LGBTI+ community...we as a community are going through the most inhumane time and House of Pink Volume 1 is a stance we are taking to show that we are alive and kicking as a community, we are who we are and have the right to express our lives however we please without anyone’s permission to exist,” said Lebogang Toko.

“The killings didn’t start now, they've been happening. We’ve been treated badly. We've been called names. We've been shunned by our communities. Our parents have been kicking us out.

“As a community let’s walk hand in hand together, in our dresses, in our eyelashes, in our makeup, in our heels, in our t-shirt, in our pants to say this is who we are and we're not going anywhere.”

He adds: “House of Pink Volume 1 is a drag show, that is, if you didn't know you are going to be educated, if you knew, you're going to be reminded of what the culture is of dragging and who we are as the LGBTI+ community.

“We thought about many different names and House of Pink popped up. It’s flamboyant, it is what it is. We are who we are. We are Pink. We are loud. We are proud.”

According to Toko although the show is about glitz and glam, is also about educating the communities about the drag lifestyle and the real message behind pride month.

“We’ve kind of lost the depth and the sensitivity and an understanding of what it means to celebrate pride month. Something like a drag culture...before even RuPaul made it mainstream, it was utilised as a form of the statement, a march for purpose.

Drag is a powerful mechanism for educating.

“We will also be educating people on lip-syncing, costume changing, the extravaganza of it all and importantly, the drag lifestyle.

“House of Pink Volume 1 celebrates the art form in all its majestic glory with fun and laughter.”

This not to be missed show premieres on Friday, October 8, and runs till Sunday, October 10. Tickets are available at Webtickets for R150.
